Schola Data API
Free, open school data for 148,857 schools — profiles, locations, and Schola Grades — as JSON and CSV. Build school search into real-estate listings, relocation tools, maps, and research.
Quick start
No API key, no signup. Every file is a static JSON or CSV document served from our CDN with CORS enabled, so you can call it from a browser or a server.
curl https://schola.org/api/v1/index.json
curl https://schola.org/api/v1/regions/us/md.json
curl https://schola.org/api/v1/schools/us/md/us-240009000151.json
Endpoints
| URL | Returns |
|---|---|
/api/v1/index.json | Every country and state/region, with school counts and links to the lists below. |
/api/v1/regions/{country}/{region}.json | Summary of every school in a state, e.g. /regions/us/tx.json: id, name, type, grades, city, Schola Grade, page URL and API URL. |
/api/v1/schools/{country}/{region}/{id}.json | Full profile for one school: address, coordinates, phone, website, district, enrollment, students per teacher, and the full Schola Grade breakdown. |
/api/v1/bulk/{country}-{region}.csv | The same data as one CSV per state, e.g. us-ca.csv. Best for loading into a database. |
/api/v1/scales.json | The grading scale used in each country and the weight of each grade component. |
School IDs
U.S. public schools use their NCES ID: us-{12-digit NCES ID} (e.g. us-240009000151), so you can join our data to any federal dataset. Private and international schools use {country}-{region}-{slug} or us-p-{NCES private school ID}. IDs are stable; URLs on schola.org may change if a school is renamed.

Grade badge for your website
Show a school's Schola Grade on a listing or profile page with two lines of HTML. Every school page on Schola has a ready-made snippet under Embed this school's grade.

The badge widget includes attribution automatically. Underlying public-school records come from the U.S. Department of Education (NCES, CRDC, EDFacts), which are in the public domain.
Freshness, limits & good practice
- Data is regenerated whenever sources update (federal datasets publish yearly). Each response carries
method_versionfor grades. - Responses are cached for an hour. For large integrations, download the per-state CSVs instead of fetching every school file.
- Grades compare schools within a state; don't compare grades across states. See how Schola Grades work.
- A
nullgrade means there isn't enough public data to grade fairly — never treat it as a low grade.
